The Employment Rights Bill: a better life at work

What is it? How will it change members’ working lives? How did we get here? And what happens next? An introduction to the ERB

A still image from the film, showing people walking through a train station, sped up. It reads: "The Employment Rights Bill will transform life at work.

The Employment Rights Bill (ERB) is one of the flagship initiatives of the Labour government – one that will bring a host of positive changes to workplace rights.

UNISON has been at the heart of this change, from the very beginning.

Over the coming months, we will be keeping members and activists up to date with the passage of the bill through Parliament, while  introducing its key elements – from strengthening family friendly rights, to improvements in facility time for reps, to curbs on fire and rehire and exploitative zero-hours contracts.

In the meantime, this film sums up the state of play for this game-changing bill. Please share with everyone you know.

As a cleaner, with my local city council(enjoying a break, watching the videos, of the bills progression),I realise the beed for improvement in our terms and conditions,as much as the obvious pay, pensions etc.

  2. I am so pleased that the zero hour contracts are being looked into they are an absolute disgrace for hard working employees it’s about time they were abolished.

I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to you for the tremendous strides you have made in advancing the Employment Rights Bill: a pathway toward a better life at work.

Your tireless efforts have brought us to this pivotal moment, and it feels as though we are on the cusp of making a life-changing difference for so many workers.

As a proud member, I want to express that the Greater London Branch is entirely behind this initiative and is keen to see its success. Your work inspires confidence that meaningful change is within reach.

As an Administrator at a university, I often spend weekends reading updates on the Bill’s progression through government channels and other platforms.

Each time, I am reminded of how essential this legislation is, not only for improving well-known areas such as grade pay and pensions but also for recognising the critical need to enhance the terms and conditions for administrators like myself. Our work is integral to the smooth functioning of Higher Education, and these improvements would reflect the respect and value that our contributions deserve.

Please keep up your excellent efforts. Your advocacy is shaping a brighter future, not just for administrators, but for the entire workforce. Together, through collaboration and persistence, we can achieve the progress that will benefit everyone.

Thank you once again for your dedication and determination.
    In solidarity,
    Greater London Branch Member

I’m so happy zero hour contacts are being looked at. It’s appalling to think if your taken seriously ill or need an operation you won’t get paid and end up in debt.

Or that you can’t take a holiday for fear of not getting paid this is what burns people out and damages their health more in the long run.

People need a solid contract so they know exactly what they will get for their hard work and decent protection if they are ill.
