Christina McAnea: my first year as your general secretary

UNISON’s general secretary on a ‘challenging and demanding year’ as the union continued to navigate the pandemic – and her goals moving forward

In addressing members at the start of 2022, general secretary Christina McAnea spoke of the continuing work of the union in supporting members during the COVID-19 crisis: “Making sure that we’re demanding safe working conditions, PPE and all the things you need to make it possible for you to continue to work safely.”

But the virus did not mean that the day-to-day concerns of members and their union suddenly went away. UNISON had also been fighting fire and rehire, stopping outsourcing and privatisation, and ensuring that the introduction of a national social care service is now part of Labour Party policy.

For the year ahead, Ms McAnea said, “My focus, as always, is on you, our amazing members. We we will fight to get better pay deals, and we will fight injustice together.”
